The word "petrified" comes from an Ancient Greek word meaning 'stone'. So, petrified wood literally means 'wood turned into stone'. This process happens over a very long period of time. A tree or plant gets buried in water or volcanic ash, halting the decay process of the wood due to a lack of oxygen. Then water full of minerals flows through the buried wood, slowly filling up the empty spaces and replacing the wood's cells with these minerals. This turns the wood into stone.
